What motivates a psychopath? Elaine Burnett must find out or die.

"The most disturbing story I read all year." 5 stars. Reviewer.

Frustrated with her lover's inability to commit to marriage and a child, Elaine responds to a personal ad placed by Walker Thomas Trumbo, a disturbed would be philosopher with a warped notion of family values.

Elaine's one innocent act sets off a cascade of escalating events that will turn her life upside down and threaten it, and that of her lover, Alan Everson, a psychologist.

As Walker relentlessly stalks the couple, they struggle to solve the mystery of what is driving their tormentor before he destroys their love and their lives.

Ransom Dreams A Novel of Psychological Dread eBook Robert Bucchianeri

Book centers primarily around 4 characters (a psychopath, a woman with whom the psychopath is obsessed, the boyfriend of the 'stalked woman" - who happens to be a psychologist, and the ex-wife of the boyfriend) with 2 important peripherals (the psychopath's mother and a private investigator). The plot essentially revolves the psycho's abduction of the two women - and how the boyfriend and investigator go about rescuing the women. Obviously, there's nothing particularly imaginative here - nor does the author's writing style elevate it into anything more - with the exception of one "little twist" near the book's end that helps explain what might be some of the psycho's underlying motivations. None of the characters were particularly interesting - and the characterization of Alan, the psychologist boyfriend, felt "off" - or maybe he just represented what was an all-too real portrayal or a not particularly effective therapist, who was not totally in control of his own life. And the book's plot moved somewhat slowly - building to an ending that was left a bit unfinished in terms of where the surviving characters were headed.. (One of the book's underlying issues centered around Alan's strong feelings against parenthood - a commitment (along with his alcoholism) that led not only to his divorce, but was serving as a major obstruction in his current relationship with the girlfriend. There was also some slight controversy/tension re the role the former wife still had in Alan's life. Though the book ended with the three characters all seeming to be on good terms, Alan's future with regard to whether he would overcome his aversion to fatherhood was left a bit unclear - & thus the future the relationships also were left unclear.) Given my misconceptions at the very beginning of this book, I am not sure why I continued to read it --- other than I seem to have lately been reading a lot of "so-so" books, and even out-right "stinkers". In summary, (except for the two observations following this), all I can really say is reading it was a "time passer". Two Observations: (1) Fairly early on in the story, one of Mary's (the ex-wife's) fingers supposedly gets cut off by the psycho. Altho the book references this event more than once, when we actually "see" Mary, both during and after her abduction, there is no indication she is missing a finger . You would think such a disfigurement would merit some type of complaint from the victim - but "nada" was provided. My question is "was it her finger that was cut off" - &, if so, why did the author overlook tying this "mutilation" back into the story? (2) The book's title is a total mystery to me. Maybe, I'm taking it too literally - but, while there was an abduction, there were no ransom demands - and the only "dreams" had to do with several of the characters unfulfilled desire to have children.

Ransom Dreams A Novel of Psychological Dread eBook Robert Bucchianeri Reviews

I read an earlier book by this author and was looking forward to his next one. I couldn't get past the first 10 pages in Ransom Dreams. Perhaps I should have tried harder.

I had enjoyed the way he captured the essence of the San Francisco Bay Area in his previous book and the sparkling dialogue between his characters. I just did not find the opening pages of this new book interesting enough to hold my attention.
I read a lot and developed a 'thick skin' in a way to emotion envoked from reading a novel. However, I could not get past the first couple of chapters of this book....it just had such a sinister and creepy tone and I felt unconfortable reading it. Maybe its the whole 'internet dating' thing and all the negative experiences I and others have had ....we have all met our share of 'creeps' but this book was not my kind of reading. sorry.
I can't remember if this book was free or not. Once I started to read it, I could barely put it down. I read it in 2 days. I thought it was an excellent book. The plot was suspenseful and I could see this book becoming a movie on SyFy Channel. I like a lot of different types of ebooks, but this is a favorite. I just can't imagine anyone not liking this.

Characters were few and easy to remember. A bit gruesome, but that makes for a good thriller.

5 Stars!!!
I liked the story line, and the writing wasn't too bad. Many metaphors were questionable, and word choices didn't exactly give the reader what I think was the intended meaning. Some parts were a bit confusing. For example, the main character's girlfriend is kidnapped. He finds out (somehow, we don't know how) that she has escaped. But in the next chapter, she is still held prisoner by her abductor. The ending was a cop out. I suppose the author couldn't make up his mind how he wanted it to end. Wow, I was disappointed.
I loved reading this story as it kept you wondering what this disturbed character was going to do next. I really enjoyed how the storyline built up to a fever pitch and when the main character Walker made his move after a lengthy time of planning and preparation, the suspense in me was yearning for resolution. I was concerned with all the victims as the author wrote with such style that you automatically cared for these characters and awaited the next event. I look forward to reading more of Bucchianeri's works.
Frustrated with her lover's inability to commit to marriage and a child, Elaine responds to a personal ad placed Walker Thomas Trumbo. After meeting him and realizing the mistake she has made she trys to explain to him that she is not interested but he doesnt take no for an answer so easy.
As the story unfolds you watch Walker systematically set out to destroy her life.
This is a very dark story. The villain is twisted and very frightening. I found myself scared of what would happen next. I just couldnt put this book down and read it in two days. It left me on the edge of my seat.
I wish that there was more at the end of the book. I felt like it could have explored that a little more but overall a great read.
